Shadi Lal Building, Lahore - Documentation

The rich heritage of Lahore needs understanding and acknowledgment. The documentation of the Shadi Lal building is a humble attempt to give back to the city just a fragment of all that it has given us.

Shadi Lal building was constructed in 1909 by Sir Shadi Lal, former Lahore high court chief justice, as his residence. The estate covered an area of 31 canals, 19 marlas and 125 square feet. The building is situated on Lytton Road, near Jain Mandir, in Lahore. Honourble Sir Shadi Lal, who had adorned the seat of Chief Justice of High Court of Judicature at Lahore from 1920 to 1934 and Member of Judicial Committee, Privy Council, London from 1934 to 1938, hailed from this place. Sir Shadi Lal was born in 1872 in a prominent family. He passed away on March 27, 1945.

In 1941, Fateh Chand trust purchased this property and launched the Fateh Chand College for Women. After the creation of Pakistan, the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) sold the property to the Education Department. The sale deed was executed in 1969. Part of the building has been encroached on, but the main building has been in the Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority's (TEVTA) possession.

The building’s architectural features reflect a mixture of both the Mughal and the Colonial Period. It has domes, minarets on the sides, arched verandas, inner courtyards and a main hall from the Mughal period. Its Corinthian columns and pediments represent the colonial period.
